Glossary
The language of The Master Key System, defined. Use this as a companion to the weekly readings — return to it whenever a term feels half-understood.
- The Master Key System
- The 24-week correspondence course written by Charles F. Haanel and first published in 1916. Each week is one part — a lesson, a sitting exercise, and a set of questions — designed to be lived for seven days before moving on.
- The Universal MindWeek 1
- Haanel's term for the one creative intelligence that pervades all things. The individual mind is the means by which the Universal becomes personal and acts in the world.
- The Objective MindWeek 2
- The conscious, reasoning, decision-making aspect of mind. It directs attention, chooses, and accepts or rejects what enters the subconscious.
- The Subjective MindWeek 2
- The deeper, receptive, creative aspect of mind. It accepts what the objective mind impresses on it and is the seat of memory, intuition, and the connection to the Universal Mind.
- The Solar PlexusWeek 3
- Haanel's metaphor for the brain of the subjective mind — the sun of the body. Through relaxation and attention to it, vital energy is generated and radiated. Located behind the stomach.
- Sitting (the Exercise)Week 1
- The disciplined daily practice at the heart of the course: sit in the same chair, in the same posture, relaxed and motionless, holding the week's specific instruction. Begins at fifteen minutes and never grows shorter.
- ConcentrationWeek 4
- Sustained attention on one object, idea, or quality without wandering. The work of every week is to grow the capacity for this — first physically (stillness), then mentally (a single thought), then qualitatively (a single feeling).
- VisualizationWeek 7
- The act of forming a clear, definite mental picture of what is desired, held with feeling, until the subconscious accepts it and the means of its expression begin to appear.
- Causation (Law of)Week 4
- The principle that every effect has a cause, and that thought — held with feeling and conviction — is itself a cause in the world of effects. To change conditions, change the thought that produced them.
- The Law of AttractionWeek 7
- Haanel's formulation: like attracts like. The dominant mental attitude assembles around itself the people, circumstances, and resources that match it. Not magic — the way attention organizes action and perception.
- Omnipotence, Omniscience, OmnipresenceWeek 5
- The three attributes of the Universal Mind: all-power, all-knowledge, all-presence. The individual draws on these to the degree that the channel — the personal mind — is clear and aligned.
- Inductive ReasoningWeek 9
- Reasoning from particulars to general law — from observation to principle. Haanel uses this to argue that the operation of mind, observable in the small, must hold in the large.
- The SilenceWeek 6
- The condition entered during the sitting when thought stills and the subjective mind becomes receptive. Not absence but presence — the ground from which insight arises.
- AffirmationWeek 8
- A definite, present-tense statement of truth held with attention until the subconscious accepts it as fact. Used in The Master Key as a tool of concentration, not as a slogan.
- FaithWeek 11
- In Haanel's sense, the calm expectation that the law of cause and effect will operate. Not belief in spite of evidence — confidence in the process before its visible result.
- InsightWeek 12
- The faculty by which one sees into a situation, problem, or person and understands directly. Cultivated by the silence and by the sustained focus of the daily sitting.
- The Law of GrowthWeek 13
- What you give attention to grows. Attention is the gardener; the subconscious is the soil; the thought-image is the seed.
- VibrationWeek 14
- Haanel's term for the quality or frequency of a thought-feeling. Conditions in the outer world mirror the dominant vibration of the inner. To change the outer, raise the inner.
- HarmonyWeek 17
- The natural state of the mind aligned with the Universal — the absence of inner contradiction. The mark of mastery is not effort but harmony.
- The Subconscious Imprint
- A pattern accepted by the subjective mind and acted upon automatically. The course is a 24-week practice of choosing what gets imprinted and what does not.
- Mental EquivalentWeek 19
- The clear, complete inner image of what is desired. Until the mental equivalent exists, the outer cannot. The work of the sitting is to build it.
- ServiceWeek 23
- The mature expression of the Master Key principles. Power is given for use, and use is what one does for the larger life. The final weeks turn personal mastery outward.
